Some Common Dental Emergencies and what to do:

1. Tooth Ache

You should call a dentist as soon as possible but short term solutions to help your child be comfortable include rinsing the irritated area with warm salt water, flossing the area to remove any food that may be stuck and placing a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. You can also give the child an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen.

2. Chipped Tooth

Rinse mouth with warm salt water.  Brush the chipped tooth with room temperature water to keep it clean.  Cold or warm water may cause tooth sensitivity. Apply a cold compress to the lips if you notice swelling.  Collect any fractured fragments that you can find and bring them with you when you see the dentist.  Call your dentist as soon as possible.

3. Tooth knocked out (Tooth Avulsion)

Call your dentist as soon as possible, especially if it is an adult tooth.  The sooner your child sees a dentist, the greater the likely hood that the tooth can heal.  If you find the tooth, handle the top by the crown (the top part of the tooth) as much as possible.  Rinse the tooth off.  If the tooth is an adult tooth and you are able, place the tooth back into the socket where it came out and have your child bite on a clean cloth to keep it in place till you can be seen by the dentist.  If you are not able to place it back in, place it in a buffered solution or milk and bring it as soon as possible to your dentist.

4. Tooth infection (Abscess)

Call your dentist as soon as possible.  If you notice swelling in the face and you cannot reach your dentist, call your primary physician or go to an emergency room.  A dental infection with any facial swelling can become a very serious health concern in addressed quickly.  You can place a cold compress on the swollen area to reduce the inflammation and pain.  You can also take over the counter medication such as acetaminophen to reduce pain.
