Finding out your child has a cavity can feel stressful, especially if it’s your first time navigating pediatric dental care. The good news is that tooth fillings for children are one of the most routine procedures in dentistry, and when treated early, cavities rarely become serious problems. A filling stops the decay from spreading, restores the tooth’s function, and helps your child avoid unnecessary discomfort down the road. The sooner a cavity is addressed, the simpler and quicker the treatment tends to be.
At Guadalupe Kids Dental in Seguin, TX, we treat tooth fillings as an opportunity to help your child feel comfortable and confident at the dentist, not anxious. As part of our restorative dentistry services, Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion takes a minimally invasive approach to every procedure, treating each child with the same care he would give his own. Our goal is always to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible while making the experience as calm and positive as it can be.

Why Baby Teeth Need Fillings Too
Some parents wonder whether it’s worth treating cavities in baby teeth since those teeth will eventually fall out. The answer is yes, and it matters more than most people realize. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth and support your child’s ability to eat, speak, and develop properly. Leaving decay untreated in a primary tooth can lead to pain, infection, dental emergencies, and even complications for the permanent tooth forming underneath it.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, over 52% of children ages 6 to 8 have had dental caries in their primary teeth. Cavities in baby teeth are extremely common, which means there is no reason to feel alarmed or embarrassed when your child needs a filling. What matters is getting it treated promptly so it doesn’t worsen.
What Causes Cavities in Children
Tooth decay develops when bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars and produce acids that wear down tooth enamel. Children tend to be particularly vulnerable because they consume more sugary foods and drinks, and they often need help maintaining consistent brushing habits.
A few factors that commonly contribute to cavities in kids include diet high in sugary or starchy snacks, inconsistent or incomplete brushing and flossing, not receiving fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel, and not having protective dental sealants applied to back molars. These are all things we can discuss during your child’s preventive visits so we can help reduce the risk going forward.
What to Expect During a Pediatric Filling
When your child comes in for a filling at Guadalupe Kids Dental, we walk you through every step before it begins. We believe that informed parents and prepared children have a much better experience. The process is gentle and typically straightforward, especially when the cavity is caught early.
The Filling Procedure, Step by Step
We start by numbing the area around the tooth so your child does not feel discomfort during the procedure. Once the area is numb, the decayed portion of the tooth is carefully removed. We then fill the space with a tooth-colored composite resin material that blends naturally with the surrounding tooth. The whole appointment usually takes less than an hour, and most children are back to normal activity the same day.
For children who feel anxious or who have difficulty sitting still, we offer sedation options that can make the experience more comfortable. Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is the most common option we use. It helps children feel relaxed and at ease without putting them fully to sleep, and it wears off quickly after the procedure.

Composite Fillings: A Tooth-Colored Solution
We use composite resin fillings rather than traditional metal amalgam. Composite fillings are matched to the natural color of your child’s teeth, making them virtually invisible. They also bond directly to the tooth structure, which means we typically need to remove less of the healthy tooth compared to older filling methods. This supports our commitment to conservative, minimally invasive care. For more significant decay, we may recommend a dental crown.
Composite fillings are durable, safe, and well-suited for children’s teeth. They hold up well to the pressure of chewing and can last for many years with proper care and regular dental cleanings and checkups. Maintaining good preventive dental habits at home is the best way to protect your child’s fillings and reduce the chance of new cavities forming.

Meet your doctor
Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
