Ready to Schedule Your Child's Visit?
A tumble off a bike, a collision during recess, or a trip down the stairs can happen in the blink of an eye, and when a child hurts their mouth, the moment is jarring for the whole family. Dental trauma is one of the most common childhood injuries, ranging from a chipped front tooth to a tooth that has been pushed out of position, and knowing what to do can make a real difference in how well and how quickly your child heals.
At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we understand how stressful those moments can be, and we are here to help families in Seguin, Geronimo, Marion, New Braunfels, Stockdale, and surrounding communities get the care they need. Our pediatric emergency care is provided by Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion, a board-certified pediatric dentist who completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he received extensive training in treating dental trauma and medically complex pediatric patients. We are built to handle the unexpected.

What Counts as Pediatric Dental Trauma?
Dental trauma in children covers a wide range of injuries to the teeth, gums, and supporting structures. Parents are often unsure whether what happened to their child actually warrants a dental visit, and the short answer is: when in doubt, call us.
According to a clinical review published on the National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine, traumatic dental injuries in children require prompt evaluation because even injuries that look minor on the surface can affect the development of underlying permanent teeth. Getting your child seen quickly by a pediatric dental specialist is always the right move.
Common Types of Dental Trauma We Treat
Here are some of the most frequent types of dental injuries we see in children:
- Chipped or fractured teeth: A break in the enamel or dentin, sometimes exposing a sensitive layer of the tooth that may need immediate protection or repair
- Loosened teeth: A tooth that has been moved or pushed deeper into the gum from impact
- Displaced teeth: Teeth that have shifted out of their normal position but are still in the socket
- Soft tissue injuries: Cuts or lacerations to the lips, gums, or tongue that may need attention alongside any tooth injury
It is also worth noting that primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth are treated differently, and our decisions will always take your child’s long-term dental development into account.
When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist After an Injury?
Any time your child injures their mouth, it is worth reaching out to us as soon as possible. Time matters with many types of dental trauma, particularly when a tooth has been displaced or a fracture has exposed the inner part of the tooth.
You should contact us right away if your child has a tooth that is visibly out of position, is experiencing significant pain or swelling, has a broken tooth with a rough or sharp edge, or has bleeding that does not slow down after gentle pressure. We also recommend being seen anytime your child’s tooth looks darker than the others around it in the days or weeks after an injury, as this can be a sign that the tooth has been affected internally and needs evaluation.

How Is Dental Trauma Treated in Children?
Every injury is different, and our approach to treatment is always tailored to your child’s specific situation. We take a minimally invasive approach, and our goal is to protect your child’s natural teeth and support healthy development whenever possible.
What to Expect at Your Child’s Visit
At your child’s appointment, we will thoroughly examine the affected area, which may include digital X-rays to assess what is happening below the gumline. From there, Dr. Bennion will walk you through the options that make the most sense for your child. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, treatment may involve smoothing or bonding a chipped tooth, stabilizing a loosened tooth, or, in some cases, a restoration to protect the tooth and surrounding structures.
Why Choose a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist for Dental Trauma?
Not all dental offices are equipped to handle the unique needs of children, especially when injuries involve baby teeth or developing teeth. Pediatric dentists complete additional years of specialized training beyond dental school, focusing specifically on children’s oral health, behavior, and development.
Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and received his training at one of the country’s leading children’s hospitals. He also has deep personal experience caring for children with special needs, including his own son, and our practice is proud to offer special needs dentistry for children and adults who require extra consideration and support. Every child who walks through our doors is treated with the same patience, compassion, and individualized attention.

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
