Support your baby’s health and comfort early on. Our frenectomy for newborns in Seguin, TX helps overcome breastfeeding challenges, ensuring proper feeding and promoting healthy development from the start.

When your newborn struggles with breastfeeding, every feeding session becomes stressful for both you and your baby. Many feeding difficulties stem from tongue-tie or lip-tie conditions, where tight tissue restricts your baby’s ability to latch properly, leading to painful nursing sessions and inadequate nutrition.

At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we understand how challenging these early weeks can be for new parents. Our board-certified pediatric dental team offers gentle frenectomy procedures to help resolve tongue-tie and lip-tie issues, allowing your baby to feed comfortably and establishing our practice as your child’s dental home from their very first months. Comprehensive pediatric dental services begin with addressing the unique needs of your newborn, ensuring proper oral development from the start.

A nine month old baby with a tongue tie and orthopedic shoes lays on her back with her tongue sticking out as much as possible as she holds the bar between her orthopedic shoes that she wore for a club foot.

Understanding Tongue-Tie and Lip-Tie in Newborns

Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) occurs when the tissue connecting your baby’s tongue to the floor of their mouth is too tight or extends too far forward. This restricts tongue movement, making it difficult for your baby to create the proper suction needed for effective breastfeeding. Similarly, lip-tie happens when the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums prevents your baby from flanging their lip outward during feeding.

These conditions affect approximately 5-10% of newborns and can significantly impact breastfeeding success. Signs your baby may have tongue-tie or lip-tie include difficulty latching, frequent milk spillage, clicking sounds while nursing, and prolonged feeding sessions. You may also experience nipple pain, cracked or damaged nipples, and low milk supply due to inadequate milk transfer.

Early intervention through frenectomy can restore normal feeding function and prevent future complications. The procedure involves carefully releasing the restrictive tissue to allow proper tongue and lip movement, enabling your baby to nurse effectively and comfortably.

The Gentle Frenectomy Procedure

Our approach to newborn frenectomy focuses on comfort and minimal intervention. We perform these procedures using precise techniques designed specifically for infants, ensuring the safest possible experience for your baby. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes and involves making a small, controlled release of the restrictive tissue.

Before the procedure, we thoroughly evaluate your baby’s mouth and discuss your breastfeeding challenges to determine the best treatment approach. Many parents worry about pain, but newborns typically experience minimal discomfort due to the limited nerve endings in the frenulum tissue. Your baby can usually nurse immediately after the procedure, often with noticeable improvement.

Post-Procedure Care

Recovery from infant frenectomy is generally smooth and straightforward. You’ll receive specific instructions for gentle mouth exercises to prevent the tissue from reattaching and ensure optimal healing. Most babies return to normal feeding patterns within 24-48 hours, though some improvement may be immediate.

We provide comprehensive follow-up care to monitor healing and address any questions you may have during recovery. Our team remains available to support you through this process, ensuring your baby’s comfort and your peace of mind.

Benefits of Early Frenectomy Treatment

Addressing tongue-tie and lip-tie early provides numerous benefits for both you and your baby. Successful breastfeeding becomes possible, eliminating the stress and frustration of difficult feeding sessions. Your baby receives proper nutrition, supporting healthy weight gain and development during these crucial early months.

Early treatment also prevents potential future complications. Untreated tongue-tie can lead to speech development delays, dental alignment issues, and social challenges as your child grows. By addressing these concerns in infancy, you help ensure normal oral development and function throughout your child’s life.

Many families experience immediate improvements in feeding effectiveness following frenectomy. This success often leads to longer breastfeeding duration, stronger parent-child bonding, and reduced feeding-related stress for the entire family. Additionally, addressing these issues early establishes your relationship with a pediatric dental practice committed to your child’s long-term oral health.

Why Choose Pediatric Dental Care for Frenectomy

Selecting a board-certified pediatric dentist for your baby’s frenectomy ensures you receive care from a professional trained specifically in treating infants and children. Unlike general practitioners, pediatric dentists complete additional years of training focused on child development, behavior management, and age-appropriate treatment techniques.

Our practice combines advanced training with a gentle, family-centered approach to infant care. We understand the unique needs of newborns and work closely with lactation consultants and pediatricians to provide comprehensive support for breastfeeding families. This collaborative approach ensures your baby receives the most appropriate care while supporting your breastfeeding goals.

The timing of frenectomy is crucial, and having a pediatric dentist evaluate your baby ensures proper assessment and treatment planning. We can also identify other oral development concerns early and provide guidance for maintaining your baby’s oral health as they grow. Starting infant dental visits early creates a foundation for lifelong oral health and establishes comfort with dental care from the beginning.

Our commitment to preventive care begins with addressing feeding issues in infancy and continues through comprehensive pediatric dental services as your child develops.

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
