Some kids dread the dentist, no matter what you try. Your daughter might panic the second she sees dental tools. Your son’s sensory issues could make the sounds and sensations unbearable. Maybe your child needs several fillings, but melts down before you even finish one. Guadalupe Kids Dental offers sedation dentistry in Gonzales, TX, for families dealing with these real struggles.
Dr. Kit Bennion earned his certification in pediatric sedation on top of his dental training. That means he learned how medications work differently in kids’ bodies, how to watch for problems during procedures, and what to do if something goes wrong. He uses this knowledge every time a child needs sedation help.

When Kids Really Need Sedation
Some children just can’t get through dental appointments no matter how hard everyone tries. Telling them to be brave doesn’t help when they have actual phobias from past bad experiences, or when their brain works in ways that make sitting still almost impossible.
Here’s what happens without sedation for these kids: cavities turn into infections, broken teeth stay broken, problems pile up. Parents spend months dreading appointments where nothing gets done. It’s frustrating for everyone.
Sedation fixes this. Nitrous oxide or medicine taken before the appointment calms kids down without knocking them out. They stay awake, can follow instructions, and actually let us work. But that overwhelming fear that stopped everything before? It drops to a level they can handle. We can finally help their teeth.
This really helps certain kids. Those with autism, ADHD, bad gag reflexes, or scary dental memories face real obstacles to regular care. Instead of forcing them through terrible experiences or just giving up, sedation gives us another option.
Keeping Kids Safe During Sedation
Everything we do includes safety checks, but sedation needs extra care. Before any sedation, we go through your child’s medical history, what medicines they take, how they’ve reacted to anesthesia before, and what we’re planning to do. Some kids shouldn’t have sedation, and we need to figure that out first.
Dr. Bennion’s training went deep into how medicines work in children. He knows kids process drugs differently than adults, how much their weight matters for dosing, and which health problems make sedation risky. He thinks through all of this for every case.
Our equipment matters too. We use monitors made for kids’ vital signs, not adults’. The right-sized pulse readers, blood pressure cuffs, and heart monitors give us accurate information on small patients.
Everyone in the room during sedation knows their job. They know what normal looks like, they catch warning signs fast, and they know exactly what to do. Having multiple people watching creates backup safety.
How Sedation Appointments Work
We send instructions days before your appointment, not that morning. Different sedation types have different rules about eating, so we tell you exactly when your child needs to stop eating solid food versus clear liquids. If you miss these times, we might have to reschedule.
Morning works better for sedation. Kids handle not eating more easily when they sleep through most of it. Plus, morning appointments give us the whole day if something unexpected happens and we need more time watching your child.
When you arrive, we check if your child’s healthy before giving any medication. If they got sick since you scheduled, we might need to reschedule. Sedating sick kids adds risks we don’t need to take.
How sedation feels depends on the type we use. Nitrous oxide kicks in fast and wears off quick. Medicine by mouth takes longer to work and stays in the system for hours. Dr. Bennion picks what makes sense for your child and how long the work takes.
We keep watching until your child’s alert again. You get written instructions about what to avoid, what they can eat, and what symptoms mean you should call us. Most kids sleep hard that night but wake up fine the next day.
Other Ways We Help
Preventing problems means fewer times needing sedation. New patient visits check your child’s dental health, spot risks, and make a prevention plan just for them. Sealants, fluoride, and teaching good brushing all help avoid cavities.
When problems do happen, urgent care takes care of infections, injuries, or sudden pain before they get worse. Catching things early usually means easier fixes.
Filling work repairs damage using materials right for kids. Baby teeth need different handling than permanent teeth since they’ll fall out eventually, but they still need protection until that happens naturally.
Get Started with Guadalupe Kids Dental
You know your child best. If dental visits have been disasters, if their fear keeps growing, or if you’ve been avoiding treatment because you can’t figure out how to make it work, sedation might be your answer.
Dr. Bennion looks at each situation on its own. Not every nervous kid needs sedation. And not every kid who seems calm can actually sit through complicated procedures. Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
