Dental visits stress out some children more than others. Maybe your child panics when they see the dental chair. Perhaps they have sensory issues that make normal dental sounds feel overwhelming. Or they might need several procedures done, but can’t handle sitting through even one. Guadalupe Kids Dental offers sedation dentistry in Kingsbury, TX to help children who struggle with dental anxiety get the care they actually need.

Dr. Kit Bennion earned certification in pediatric sedation on top of his regular dental training. This means he learned how different medications work in children’s bodies, how to watch patients carefully during procedures, and how to handle any problems that might come up. He uses this knowledge every time a child needs sedation.

When Sedation Helps Children

Some kids just can’t make it through dental appointments, no matter how patient everyone tries to be. Telling them to “be brave” doesn’t work when they have real phobias, when past medical experiences scared them badly, or when their brain works differently in ways that make sitting still nearly impossible.

What happens to these children without sedation? Their cavities get worse and turn into infections. Broken teeth stay broken. Problems pile up. Parents dread every appointment, knowing nothing will get done.

Sedation fixes this. Nitrous oxide or medicine taken by mouth calms children down without knocking them out. They stay awake, can follow instructions, and respond when we talk to them. But the crushing anxiety that stopped treatment before drops to levels they can handle. We can finally fix their teeth.

Certain situations really benefit from sedation. Kids with autism, ADHD, terrible gag reflexes, or scary dental memories all face real obstacles that make regular dental care incredibly hard. Instead of forcing them through awful experiences or just giving up on their teeth, sedation gives us another way forward.

How We Keep Kids Safe

Everything we do includes safety steps, but sedation needs extra care. Before any sedation, we look at your child’s complete medical history, what medicines they take, how they’ve reacted to anesthesia before, and what procedures we’re planning. Some children shouldn’t have sedation, and figuring that out beforehand keeps everyone safe.

Dr. Bennion’s certification training went deep into how medications work in children. He knows why kids process drugs differently than adults, how weight changes dosing, and which health conditions create problems. He uses this information every time he decides about sedation.

Our equipment matters too. We use monitors set up for children’s vital signs, not adult ones. Pulse readers, blood pressure cuffs, and heart monitors sized right give us accurate information on small patients.

Everyone working during sedation knows their job. They understand what normal looks like, they spot warning signs fast, and they know exactly what to do. Having multiple people watching creates backup safety.

Getting Ready and What Happens

Instructions come days before your appointment, not that morning. Different sedation types have different fasting rules, so we tell you exactly when your child needs to stop eating solid food versus drinking clear liquids. Missing these times means we might have to reschedule.

Morning appointments work better for sedation. Kids handle not eating well when they sleep through most of the fasting time. Scheduling early also gives us the whole day if something unexpected happens and we need more time to watch your child.

When you get here, we will check your child’s health before giving any medication. If they got sick since you scheduled, we might need to reschedule. Sedating sick kids creates unnecessary risks.

How sedation feels depends on which type we use. Nitrous oxide starts working in minutes and wears off fast. Medicine taken by mouth takes longer to kick in and stays in their system for hours. Dr. Bennion picks the right method based on your child’s needs and how long the procedure takes.

We keep watching until your child is alert again. You get written instructions about what activities to avoid, what they should eat, and what symptoms mean you should call us right away. Most kids sleep hard that night but wake up normally the next day.

Other Ways We Help Kids

Preventing problems means fewer sedated procedures. New patient visits check your child’s overall dental health, spot risk factors, and create prevention plans just for them. Sealants, fluoride treatments, and teaching good brushing habits all reduce cavities.

When problems do happen, urgent care handles infections, injuries, or sudden pain before they get worse. Catching things early often means simpler fixes.

Repair work fixes damage using materials matched to what kids need. Baby teeth need different handling than permanent teeth since they’ll fall out eventually, but they still need protection until that happens naturally.

Parents know their kids best. If dental appointments have been disasters, if your child’s dental fear keeps getting worse, or if you’ve avoided treatment because you couldn’t figure out how to make it work, sedation might solve your problem.

Dr. Bennion looks at each situation individually. Not every nervous child needs sedation, and not every calm-looking child can actually cooperate through hard procedures. Reach out to us to talk about your specific situation and find out if sedation dentistry makes sense for your family. Kingsbury children deserve complete dental care even when cooperation is hard, and we’ve built the tools to provide it.

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
