What Are White Dental Crowns?

White dental crowns are made from a variety of materials and can be used as an alternative to stainless steel crowns, which are often used for molars. Bonded in place by glue, these crowns are less likely to trigger an allergic response than stainless steel crowns, making them a great option for young children.

The different materials that white dental crowns may be made of include the following:

Zirconia

This is a ceramic material that can be matched to the color of your child’s natural tooth enamel. When white dental crowns are made from zirconia, the crowns are durable, resistant to staining and plaque, and biocompatible with gum tissue. Another benefit of these types of white dental crowns is that they can be placed in one office visit which is ideal for parents who have active little ones who may not want to attend multiple appointments.

Resin Composite Plastic

Another option for pediatric white dental crowns is those made with resin composite plastic. These crowns are often less expensive than those made from other materials and can be color-matched to create a cohesive look that will match the rest of your child’s smile. Because the resin used in tooth-colored restorations, like these white dental crowns, contains fluoride. This is great because it can help prevent decay from forming and causing future issues for your little one’s oral health.

Is My Child a Good Candidate for White Crowns?

As a parent, you want the best for your child, especially when it comes to their health and well-being. White dental crowns are a great option we recommend to our pediatric patients that may need to have a damaged or decayed tooth restored.

If you are wondering if white crowns are the right choice, we are happy to help answer any questions you may have about what makes a patient a good candidate for these tooth-colored crowns. Offering both durability and a natural appearance, white dental crowns are a popular option for young smiles, but are they right for every patient? Some of the factors we consider when deciding who may be a good candidate for white crowns include the following:

Tooth location: White dental crowns are typically preferred for front teeth where appearance matters the most.
Child’s age: For older children who may be more conscious of their appearance, the ability to color-match these crowns is often considered a major benefit and reason we may recommend your child undergoes this treatment.
Severity of decay: If the decay process is not too far along, white dental crowns are often considered a better option. However, in cases of significant decay, a stainless steel crown might be considered for its added durability.
Child’s preference: Our dental team can discuss with your child if they have concerns about the appearance of a silver crown and explain the benefits of having a white crown instead.

Depending on these factors, we can determine whether your child will benefit the most from having a white crown. To learn more about this option to keep your child’s smile healthy and bright, contact us today!

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
