Children with special health care needs often face extra hurdles at the dentist, even though their oral health matters just as much as any other child’s. Parents in Gonzales and the surrounding communities may wonder how their child will handle the sights and sounds of a dental office, whether the team will listen, and what accommodations will be offered.

Guadalupe Kids Dental in Seguin welcomes families from Gonzales and nearby communities, and Dr. Kit Bennion and our caring team build positive, judgment-free dental experiences for children with special health care needs. Dr. Bennion completed his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, where he received extensive training in sedation dentistry and in treating medically complex pediatric patients.

How Special Health Care Needs Can Affect Dental Care

Children with special health care needs often need a different approach to dental care. These needs may stem from physical, developmental, behavioral, cognitive, or sensory conditions that shape how a child experiences a dental visit. A national survey brief from HRSA found nearly 1 in 5 children in the United States (19.4%) had a special health care need in 2019–2020, and these children were nearly four times as likely as other children to have unmet health care needs.

Your child may also face a higher risk of certain oral health issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, enamel defects, or dental trauma. Some conditions affect how teeth develop, while others make it harder to keep up with oral hygiene at home. Certain medications can contribute to dry mouth or gum overgrowth as well.

Common Oral Health Challenges

Children with special needs may struggle with routine brushing and flossing because of motor skill limitations, sensory aversions to certain tastes or textures, or behavioral challenges. Some experience oral aversion that makes it difficult to tolerate a toothbrush or dental instrument, while others have physical limitations that make sitting in a dental chair hard, or simply need extra time to process instructions before they feel ready.

Preparing for Your Child’s Appointment

Clear communication before the visit goes a long way. When you call to schedule, tell us about your child’s condition, communication style, sensory sensitivities, and anything that has worked well at past medical visits. That gives our team time to prepare and, if needed, set aside extra time for the appointment.

A short office tour can also help. Many children feel more at ease after seeing the space, meeting the team, and getting used to the sights and sounds ahead of time. We are happy to walk your family through what to expect before the first visit.

What to Bring and Share

Bring a list of your child’s medications and medical conditions, along with contact information for other health care providers involved in their care. If your child communicates with picture cards, sign language, or another method, let us know so we can adapt. A favorite toy, blanket, or familiar music can also help your child stay calm.

Tell us what works best for your child. Do they respond better to a demonstration than a spoken explanation? Are certain textures, sounds, or lights hard for them? Is there a time of day when they tend to be most cooperative? Details like these help us tailor the visit.

Creating a Positive Dental Experience

Flexibility, patience, and individualized care make the biggest difference for kids with special needs. We can schedule appointments during quieter times with fewer patients in the waiting area, adjust how we communicate, use behavior guidance techniques, or break treatment into shorter visits to match your child’s comfort level.

Some children benefit from protective stabilization, which helps keep them safe during a procedure when other behavior guidance techniques are not enough. When anxiety or the complexity of treatment makes care hard to provide safely, sedation dentistry may be recommended so treatment can be completed comfortably.

The Role of Family Members

Parents and caregivers are essential to a successful visit. We welcome family members to stay with their child throughout the appointment to provide comfort and help with communication, and your presence can shape how your child responds.

Good oral hygiene between visits matters too. We can help you build a home care routine around your child’s specific challenges, whether that means modified toothbrushes, alternative fluoride products for sensory aversions, or a schedule that fits your family.

Building a Long-Term Dental Home

A dental home gives your child a consistent team, preventive services, and emergency dental care when it is needed. For children with special health care needs, that ongoing relationship matters even more, because our team gets to know your child’s needs and preferences over time.

Regular visits help us catch problems early and put preventive strategies such as sealants, fluoride treatments, and dietary guidance in place. We may adjust how often your child visits based on individual risk factors and oral health needs.

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their caregivers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
