Some children can’t tolerate dental work no matter how patient and gentle the approach. Physical challenges, previous scary experiences, or anxiety disorders create barriers that behavioral techniques alone won’t overcome. When your child needs dental treatment but fear or medical conditions make standard appointments impossible, sedation options may provide the solution your family needs.

We understand dental visits affect different children in different ways. Dr. Kit Bennion completed advanced training in pediatric sedation through his residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. This background prepares him to safely administer sedation while monitoring your child’s response throughout treatment.

When Sedation Becomes Necessary

Children who benefit from sedation often share common characteristics. Kids with autism may experience sensory overload from lights, sounds, or textures in dental environments. Those with ADHD struggle to remain motionless during procedures requiring precision. Some children have medical conditions causing severe gag reflexes or movement disorders.

Anxiety presents another clear indicator. While most kids feel nervous about dental visits, true dental phobia produces panic responses beyond normal nervousness. These children may vomit, hyperventilate, or become combative when facing dental treatment. Previous traumatic medical experiences often create these intense fear reactions.

Avoiding treatment compounds problems over time. Small cavities expand into larger decay. Minor chips become infection risks. What could have been simple filling work grows into more complex procedures requiring additional visits and expense. Meanwhile, your child’s fear intensifies with each delayed appointment.

Sedation allows necessary treatment to proceed safely. The medications reduce anxiety to manageable levels while keeping children conscious and responsive. They remain aware of their surroundings but feel calm enough to cooperate with treatment.

How We Maintain Safety During Sedation

Every aspect of our practice emphasizes safety, but sedation demands extra precautions. Before scheduling sedation, we review your child’s complete medical history. Certain health conditions, medications, or allergies may rule out sedation or require special accommodations.

Dr. Bennion’s advanced training covered how children’s bodies process medications differently across age groups. Younger children metabolize drugs faster than older ones. Body weight, underlying health conditions, and current medications all influence how sedation affects each patient. We calculate dosing individually based on these factors.

Our monitoring equipment tracks vital signs continuously throughout procedures. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing patterns all receive constant attention. Any concerning changes trigger immediate response protocols our team practices regularly.

Staff training extends beyond Dr. Bennion’s qualifications. Every team member present during sedation knows their specific role. Multiple people watch your child simultaneously, providing redundant safety monitoring. If one person notices something concerning, others can immediately assist.

Preparing for Your Sedation Appointment

Written instructions arrive several days before your appointment. These guidelines cover when to stop eating and drinking, what medications to give or withhold, and how to prepare your child emotionally. Following these instructions precisely affects both safety and effectiveness.

Morning appointments work best for sedation cases. Children handle empty stomachs more easily when they sleep through most of the fasting period. Early scheduling also provides the full day for observation if your child needs extra recovery time.

We perform health checks before administering any sedation. Recent illness, new medications, or developing symptoms may require rescheduling. We will not sedate children with fevers, respiratory infections, or other acute health concerns.

Different sedation methods produce different experiences. Nitrous oxide works quickly and wears off rapidly. Oral medications take longer to activate and persist for several hours. We choose methods based on your child’s needs, the procedure complexity, and timing requirements.

Post-procedure observation continues until your child shows normal alertness and stable vital signs. Most children feel drowsy that evening but return to normal activity the next day. We provide specific instruct

Additional Pediatric Dental Services

Prevention reduces the need for extensive treatment. New patient visits establish your child’s oral health baseline and identify risk factors early. Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants all decrease cavity development.

Emergency situations receive priority attention. Knocked-out teeth, infections, or severe pain require prompt treatment to prevent complications.

Restorative procedures repair existing damage using age-appropriate techniques. We treat baby teeth carefully despite their temporary nature because they maintain space for permanent teeth and support proper jaw development.

Getting Started at Guadalupe Kids Dental

If previous dental attempts ended badly, if your child’s fear grows stronger with time, or if special needs make cooperation difficult, sedation might help your family access necessary dental care.

Dr. Bennion evaluates each situation individually. Some anxious children respond well to behavioral approaches without medication. Others who appear calm still cannot cooperate through complex procedures. We determine the best approach for your specific child. Contact our Seguin office to discuss whether sedation dentistry fits your child’s needs. Every Avery Park child deserves proper dental care regardless of challenges, and we maintain the training and equipment to provide it safely.

Meet your doctor

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
