Finding out your child has a cavity doesn’t mean drama or complicated appointments. At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we repair cavities using methods that work well for children while keeping the whole experience manageable for families in Gonzales, TX.
Dr. Kit Bennion spent years beyond dental school earning board certification specifically in pediatric dentistry. That extra education taught him how children’s mouths develop differently from adults’, how to communicate with kids at various stages, and which treatment methods suit growing teeth best.

What Cavities Do to Teeth
Decay starts when mouth bacteria convert sugars into acid. That acid eats through enamel, creating holes that grow deeper over time. Left untreated, the damage eventually reaches the tooth’s nerve center, causing pain that disrupts meals, sleep, and daily routines. Fillings halt this process by removing damaged areas and sealing teeth with restorative material.
Baby teeth aren’t just placeholders waiting to fall out. They guide permanent teeth into correct positions as they emerge. Young children depend on them for forming words clearly during crucial language acquisition periods. Kids need functioning teeth to chew food properly, which directly impacts nutrition and growth. Fixing cavities protects all these roles until adult teeth naturally replace them.
Pediatric enamel measures thinner than the enamel covering adult teeth. This difference means cavities advance faster in children—small problems can worsen substantially within just weeks or months. Getting fillings done early preserves more original tooth structure and avoids escalating to crowns or more complex work.
Today’s filling materials match tooth color so precisely that nobody can tell your child had work done. Beyond appearance, these materials bond chemically to teeth, creating repairs that withstand years of normal childhood activities.
How We Handle Filling Appointments
Dr. Bennion examines more than just the problem tooth before starting treatment. Decay sometimes hides between teeth or develops under existing fillings, so checking surrounding areas prevents surprises mid-procedure. Our office maintains diagnostic tools that reveal the complete situation upfront.
Kids cooperate better when they understand what’s happening without feeling frightened. We skip intimidating dental terminology, instead describing procedures in terms suited to each child’s age. Preschoolers hear simple, reassuring explanations. Teenagers get more thorough information. Both groups finish knowing what occurred and why it mattered.
Proper numbing makes the difference between comfortable and uncomfortable treatment. We start with a topical gel that reduces needle sensation, then use injection techniques developed for pediatric patients. We always confirm complete numbness before beginning actual filling work. Your child feeling comfortable matters more than finishing quickly.
Once preparation is complete, the filling work itself moves efficiently. Dr. Bennion removes all decayed portions while preserving healthy tooth material. He builds up the filling in layers, using a special light to harden each section. Most appointments wrap up faster than parents anticipate.
What Happens During Your Visit
Check-in covers any health updates and gives you time to ask questions. If your child seems anxious, we provide extra minutes to adjust to the treatment room before starting anything.
Numbing happens first, using our gentlest approach. Most children handle this step well given our technique. Once sensation disappears, removing the cavity and placing the filling causes minimal discomfort.
Dr. Bennion works methodically to eliminate all decay while keeping maximum healthy tooth intact. This precision affects how strong the tooth remains long-term. We’d rather spend extra time doing complete work than rush and compromise quality.
Building the filling happens gradually. Each layer bonds to the one beneath it, forming an integrated restoration. When finished, the tooth looks normal and works properly. Kids can resume regular activities immediately, though we recommend waiting until numbness fades before eating to prevent accidental cheek bites.
Additional Services We Provide
Stopping cavities before they start beats repairing them. New patient visits assess your child’s cavity risk and create prevention plans tailored to their specific situation. Professional cleanings reach the plaque that home brushing can’t eliminate. Sealants and fluoride treatments add extra defense for vulnerable areas.
Some children struggle with dental anxiety even during routine procedures. Sedation options help these patients relax without losing consciousness. Kids stay awake and responsive but feel considerably calmer, enabling treatment that might otherwise prove too difficult.
When urgent problems develop suddenly, quick-response care addresses pain, injuries, or other pressing issues promptly. Early intervention often means simpler solutions.

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
