How to Know if Your Child Needs Dental X-Rays
Dental X-rays reveal important information about your child’s oral health that cannot be seen during a regular visual examination. Many dental problems develop between teeth or below the gum line, making them invisible to the naked eye until they become more serious and potentially painful. X-rays can identify the following:
- X-rays help detect cavities in their earliest stages, especially those forming between teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach effectively
- They show the development and positioning of permanent teeth that are still forming beneath the gums, allowing Dr. Benion to identify potential spacing issues or problems with tooth eruption patterns before they become complicated.
- For children, X-rays are particularly valuable because their mouths are constantly changing as they grow. Primary teeth are being lost while permanent teeth develop and emerge, creating a dynamic environment where problems can develop quickly.
Early detection through X-rays often means simpler, less invasive treatments that are more comfortable for your child.
Hidden Problems X-Rays Can Detect
Beyond cavities, dental X-rays can reveal infections at the root of teeth, cysts, or other abnormalities that might affect your child’s developing teeth and jaw. They can also detect problems with jaw development or identify teeth that may need orthodontic intervention as your child grows. Without X-rays, these issues might go unnoticed until they cause pain or more serious complications requiring extensive treatment.
Are Pediatric Dental X-Rays Safe For Your Child?
Modern digital X-ray technology has revolutionized pediatric dentistry by dramatically reducing radiation exposure while providing clearer, more detailed images. The amount of radiation your child receives from dental X-rays is extremely minimal, comparable to the natural background radiation they encounter in everyday life. To put this in perspective, your child receives more radiation exposure from a cross-country airplane flight than from a full set of dental X-rays. Digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays, making them even safer for developing bodies.
Dr. Benion and our team follow strict safety protocols, including the use of lead aprons and thyroid collars to protect your child’s body from any unnecessary exposure. We also take only the X-rays that are medically necessary, following guidelines established by pediatric dental organizations to ensure your child receives optimal care with minimal radiation exposure.
Advanced Technology for Maximum Safety
Our digital X-ray equipment is specifically designed for pediatric use, with faster exposure times that reduce the need for your child to remain still for extended periods. The images appear instantly on our computer screens, eliminating the need for chemical processing and allowing us to review results with you immediately during your visit.
What to Expect During Your Child’s X-Ray
Understanding the X-ray process can help ease any anxiety your child might feel about this new experience. Our team takes special care to make X-rays feel like a fun, interesting activity rather than something to fear.
Before taking any X-rays, we’ll explain the process to your child in age-appropriate language, often describing it as taking pictures of their teeth to help keep them healthy and strong. Your child will wear a protective lead apron, which we often describe as a special cape that helps keep them safe.
For most X-rays, your child will either sit in the dental chair or stand next to our digital X-ray machine. Our team will help position them comfortably and may use fun distractions to help them stay still for the brief moment needed to capture each image. The entire process typically takes just a few minutes and is completely painless.
Making X-Rays Comfortable and Fun
We understand that some children may feel nervous about new experiences, which is why our team focuses on creating a positive atmosphere. We encourage questions and take time to show children the X-ray equipment, helping them understand that it’s simply a tool to help take care of their teeth.
Types of X-Rays for Children
Different types of X-rays serve specific purposes in monitoring your child’s oral health development. The type and frequency of X-rays Dr. Benion recommends will depend on your child’s age, oral health status, and individual risk factors. The types of x-rays for kids include:
- Bitewing X-rays are commonly used to detect cavities between teeth and monitor the health of existing fillings. These X-rays show the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth and are particularly useful for detecting problems in the back teeth where cavities often develop.
- Panoramic X-rays provide a complete view of all your child’s teeth, including those still developing beneath the gums. These images help Dr. Benion track the development of permanent teeth and identify any potential problems with tooth positioning or jaw development.
For younger children or those with special needs, Dr. Benion may recommend modified X-ray techniques that are easier to tolerate while still providing the necessary diagnostic information.
Customized Approach for Each Child
Every child is unique, and Dr. Benion takes individual factors into account when determining the appropriate X-ray schedule. Children at higher risk for cavities may need more frequent X-rays, while those with excellent oral health may require them less often.

Meet your doctor
Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Kingsbury and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
