Cavities happen, even to children who brush regularly. Today’s dental fillings can repair the damage quickly and comfortably, getting your child’s tooth back to normal without hassle. Dr. Kit Bennion knows that treating children requires different skills than working with adults. His board certification in pediatric dentistry reflects years of additional training beyond dental school, preparing him to handle everything from a toddler’s first cavity to more complex dental needs in older children. What sets our practice apart is how we balance excellent dental work with making sure kids actually feel okay about being here.

Why Dental Fillings are Important for Children

A cavity is basically a hole where bacteria have eaten through tooth enamel. Left alone, that hole keeps growing deeper and can eventually reach the nerve, causing serious pain. Fillings stop this process by cleaning out the decay and sealing up the tooth with durable material.

Baby teeth matter more than many parents realize. Yes, they’ll eventually fall out, but they’re doing important work in the meantime. They hold space for permanent teeth, help kids speak clearly, and make it possible to chew food properly. Fixing cavities in primary teeth protects these functions and prevents problems that could affect the adult teeth waiting underneath.

Children’s tooth enamel is thinner than adult enamel, which means decay can spread faster. What starts as a small spot can become a bigger problem in just a few months. Getting fillings done promptly keeps minor issues from turning into major ones that might need crowns or more involved procedures.

Modern filling materials look just like natural teeth. Your child can smile, laugh, and eat without anyone noticing they’ve had dental work done. These materials also bond strongly to the tooth, providing protection that lasts.

Our Gentle Approach to Pediatric Tooth Fillings in Marion

Before placing any filling, Dr. Bennion examines the tooth thoroughly. Sometimes what looks like one cavity is actually several, or a tooth that seems fine has hidden decay. Our complete pediatric dental services include the diagnostic tools needed to catch everything the first time.

We’ve learned that explaining things helps kids cooperate better. Instead of using scary dental terms, we describe what’s happening in ways that make sense to different age groups. A five-year-old gets a different explanation than a twelve-year-old, but both leave understanding what happened and why.

Numbing the area properly makes all the difference. We use techniques that minimize the pinch of the anesthetic injection, and we wait to make sure everything is completely numb before starting. Rushing this step would be uncomfortable for your child, so we don’t.

The actual filling process moves quickly once we begin. Dr. Bennion removes the decayed portion of the tooth, cleans the area thoroughly, and places the filling material. The whole thing usually takes less time than you’d expect.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Filling Appointment

When you arrive, we’ll review any changes in your child’s health and answer questions you might have. If your child seems nervous, we take extra time to help them relax before we start anything.

The tooth gets numbed first. This is usually the part kids worry about most, but our gentle technique helps. Once the anesthetic takes effect, your child won’t feel the actual filling being done.

Removing the cavity requires precision. Dr. Bennion takes out all the decay while keeping as much healthy tooth as possible. This balance is important because it affects how strong the tooth will be afterward.

We place tooth-colored composite resin in layers, hardening each layer with a special light. This material bonds directly to the tooth and can be shaped to match the original contours perfectly. By the time we’re done, the tooth looks and works just like it did before the cavity developed.

Other Pediatric Dental Services We Offer in Marion

Preventing cavities beats treating them. New patients can start with a comprehensive exam where we assess your child’s cavity risk and create a prevention plan. Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants all help keep new cavities from forming.

Some kids feel really anxious about dental work, even routine procedures. For these patients, sedation options can make appointments much more manageable. These methods keep children awake but significantly calmer, turning what might be a difficult experience into a peaceful one.

Accidents happen, too. When they involve teeth, our emergency services provide fast help. Whether it’s a broken tooth or sudden pain, we’re equipped to handle urgent situations promptly.

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
