Some kids just can’t handle the dentist. It’s not about being brave or trying harder. Maybe your child has autism, and the lights and sounds are too much. Maybe they have ADHD, and sitting still for 30 minutes is genuinely impossible. Or maybe a bad experience left them terrified of anything dental-related.
When regular appointments don’t work, sedation dentistry gives kids a way to get the dental care they need. Dr. Kit Bennion trained in pediatric sedation at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. He knows how to keep kids safe and comfortable during treatment.

When Kids Really Need Sedation
You probably already know if your child needs help beyond the usual distractions and encouragement. Kids with sensory issues often find dental offices overwhelming. The bright lights hurt. The sounds are too loud. The textures feel wrong. No amount of deep breathing fixes that.
Children with ADHD face different challenges. They want to cooperate but their bodies won’t stay still long enough. Asking them to hold perfectly still while someone works in their mouth sets them up to fail.
Real dental phobia looks different from normal nervousness. These kids throw up from anxiety. They hyperventilate. They fight even though they don’t want to. Past bad experiences, especially medical trauma, often cause this level of fear.
Meanwhile, dental problems get worse while you’re trying to figure out what to do. Cavities grow. Small chips turn into bigger problems. What could have been one filling becomes multiple appointments. And your child gets more scared each time you try and fail.
Sedation takes the edge off. Your child stays awake and aware but feels calm enough to get through treatment. We usually use laughing gas through a nose piece or medication you give them at home before coming in.
How We Keep Kids Safe
Everything we do focuses on safety, especially with sedation. We look at your child’s complete medical history first. Some health issues rule out sedation entirely. Others just mean we need to adjust our approach.
Dr. Bennion learned how kids’ bodies handle medications differently depending on their age and size. A dose that works for one child might be wrong for another. We calculate everything individually.
We watch your child closely the whole time. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, breathing—we track it all continuously. If anything looks off, we know immediately and respond. We explain everything clearly so you and your child know what to expect. Understanding the process helps reduce anxiety for everyone.
When kids are relaxed, we can sometimes take care of multiple problems in one visit. That means fewer total appointments and less disruption to your family’s life.
Getting Ready for the Appointment
You’ll get detailed instructions a few days before your appointment. They cover when to stop food and drinks, which medications to give or skip, and how to prepare your child. Follow these exactly—they matter for safety and for the sedation to work right.
We check your child’s health when you arrive. A fever, new cold symptoms, or recent illness might mean we need to reschedule. We won’t sedate a sick child no matter how inconvenient rescheduling is.
During treatment, your child feels relaxed while staying awake. They can follow simple directions. Many kids remember very little about the procedure afterward, even though they were conscious.
We watch your child until they’re alert and their vital signs are stable. Most kids are drowsy that evening, but back to normal the next day. We’ll tell you exactly what to watch for and when to call us.
Other Ways We Help Kids
Prevention is always better than fixing problems. Regular cleanings, checkups, and treatments like sealants stop many cavities before they start.
Emergency care is available when accidents happen. Knocked-out teeth, infections, and severe pain need fast attention.
Fillings and other repairs fix damage from cavities or injuries. Even baby teeth need proper care because they hold space for permanent teeth and help kids speak and eat normally.

If dental visits have been a nightmare, if your child’s anxiety is getting worse instead of better, or if special needs make regular appointments impossible, sedation might be the answer.
Dr. Bennion looks at each child’s specific situation. Some anxious kids do fine with gentle techniques and patience. Others can’t manage even with those approaches. We figure out what works for your child. New patients receive a full evaluation to see if sedation makes sense and to discuss all your options. Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
