Experience relaxed, comfortable dental care with sedation dentistry in Stockdale, TX—gentle, safe treatments that help you or your child stay calm while keeping smiles healthy and confident.

Dental appointments don’t go smoothly for every child. Your daughter might panic at the sight of dental tools. Your son might have sensory processing issues that make ordinary dental work feel unbearable. Maybe your child needs several cavities filled but can’t sit through one procedure, let alone multiple appointments. Guadalupe Kids Dental offers sedation dentistry in Stockdale, TX to solve these real problems families face.

Dr. Kit Bennion went beyond standard dental training to earn certification in pediatric sedation. This extra qualification means he’s learned the science of how different medications affect growing bodies, mastered monitoring techniques that catch problems before they develop, and practiced emergency protocols specific to sedated children. He brings this knowledge to every case.

Which Children Benefit from Sedation

Dentists can’t fix teeth on children who won’t open their mouths or who thrash around in the chair. Traditional “just be brave” approaches fail for kids with genuine dental phobias, those who’ve had traumatic medical experiences, or children whose developmental differences make cooperation nearly impossible.

Consider what happens without sedation for these children. Cavities worsen until they cause infections. Broken teeth go unrepaired. Orthodontic problems compound. Parents spend months dreading appointments that accomplish nothing.

Sedation changes this dynamic completely. Nitrous oxide or oral medications calm the nervous system without rendering children unconscious. They remain responsive to instructions and aware of their surroundings, but the overwhelming anxiety that previously prevented treatment drops to manageable levels. Dentists can finally do their jobs properly.

Special circumstances particularly benefit from sedation support. Autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, extreme gag reflexes, or past dental trauma all create legitimate obstacles to standard dental care. Rather than forcing these children through distressing experiences or leaving their teeth untreated, sedation provides a third option.

Safety Protocols We Follow

Every service we provide includes built-in safety measures, but sedation requires extra precautions. Pre-treatment screening examines your child’s complete medical history, current medications, previous reactions to anesthesia, and the complexity of planned procedures. Some children aren’t good sedation candidates, and identifying them beforehand protects everyone.

Dr. Bennion’s certification training covered pediatric pharmacology in depth. He understands how children’s metabolism differs from adults’, why body weight affects dosing, and which pre-existing conditions create complications. This knowledge informs every sedation decision.

Equipment makes a difference, too. We use monitoring devices calibrated for pediatric vital signs, not adult parameters. Pulse oximeters, blood pressure cuffs, and cardiac monitors sized appropriately give accurate readings on small patients.

Staff training extends beyond the dentist. Everyone in the room during sedated procedures knows their role, understands what normal responses look like, and can identify warning signs instantly. This team approach creates redundant safety checks.

Appointment Preparation and Execution

Instructions arrive days before your appointment, not the morning of. Fasting requirements vary by sedation type, so we specify exactly when your child should stop eating solid foods versus clear liquids. Missing these windows can mean postponing treatment.

Morning appointments work best for sedation cases. Children tolerate fasting better when they sleep through most of it, and morning scheduling ensures we have full day if unexpected complications require extended monitoring.

Upon arrival, health verification happens before any medication. Colds, fevers, or other illness that developed since scheduling may require rescheduling. Sedating sick children carries unnecessary risks.

The sedation experience itself feels different depending on the method chosen. Nitrous oxide works within minutes and wears off quickly afterward. Oral medications take longer to activate and linger in the system for hours. Dr. Bennion matches the method to your child’s needs and the procedure’s length.

Post-procedure supervision continues until your child reaches baseline alertness. We provide written instructions covering activity restrictions, diet modifications, and concerning symptoms that warrant immediate calls. Most children sleep heavily that evening but wake normally the next morning.

Prevention reduces the need for sedated procedures in the first place. New patient exams establish baseline oral health, identify risk factors for future problems, and create customized prevention plans. Sealants, fluoride treatments, and proper home care techniques all decrease cavity formation.

When prevention fails and problems develop, urgent care addresses infections, injuries, or sudden pain before they escalate. Catching issues early often means simpler treatment.

Restorative work repairs existing damage using materials matched to pediatric needs. Baby teeth require different approaches than permanent teeth because they’ll eventually fall out anyway, yet they still need protection until that natural process occurs.

Take the Next Step with Guadalupe Kids Dental

Parents know their children best. If you’ve struggled through failed dental appointments, watched your child develop increasing dental anxiety, or avoided needed treatment because you couldn’t figure out how to make it happen, sedation might solve your problem.

Dr. Bennion evaluates each situation individually. Not every nervous child needs sedation, and not every child who seems calm can cooperate through complex procedures. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and learn whether sedation dentistry makes sense for your family. Stockdale children deserve complete dental care regardless of their cooperation challenges, and we’ve developed the tools to provide it.

Meet your doctor

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
