When Do Children Need a Tooth Filling
Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases in children, which is why routine dental exams are essential for catching cavities early. Decay occurs when bacteria on the teeth produce acids that wear away enamel, eventually forming a cavity that requires a filling to restore the tooth’s strength and function.
Signs your child may need a pediatric tooth filling include:
- Persistent toothache that does not go away
- Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
- A visible crack or chip in a tooth
- A white line appearing where the tooth meets the gums
- Visible dark spots on the tooth surface
Whether your child has a cavity in a baby tooth or permanent tooth, addressing the problem quickly helps prevent the decay from spreading. Baby teeth play important roles in speech development, chewing, and holding space for permanent teeth, so treating cavities in primary teeth matters just as much as in adult teeth. At Guadalupe Kids Dental, our Seguin team works closely with you and your child to explain whether a filling is necessary and what to expect during treatment.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Tooth Filling
Our compassionate team does everything possible to create a comfortable, welcoming environment that puts you and your child at ease. Before treatment, we explain every step of the process in age-appropriate language.
Pediatric tooth fillings typically involve the following steps:
- Local Anesthesia: We numb your child’s tooth and the surrounding area using a gentle local anesthetic to ensure a comfortable procedure.
- Decay Removal: Once your child is comfortable, Dr. Kit carefully removes the decayed tissue from the tooth while preserving as much healthy structure as possible.
- Cleaning: We clean and disinfect the tooth to prevent future infection and further damage.
- Composite Filling: Tooth-colored composite resin fills the cavity to strengthen the tooth and restore its natural appearance.
- Curing: A special light hardens the filling material.
- Shaping and Polishing: We reshape the filling for a natural, comfortable fit, then your child rinses to remove any debris.
A filling can be completed in one visit, allowing your child to leave our office with a healthy, restored smile. Some mild sensitivity or soreness may occur, but it typically resolves within a few days. Our team is here to answer your questions about caring for your child’s teeth and preventing future cavities at home.
Why We Use Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings
At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we use tooth-colored composite resin rather than traditional silver amalgam fillings. Composite fillings offer several advantages for pediatric patients:
- Natural appearance: The filling material matches your child’s tooth color, blending seamlessly with their smile.
- Mercury-free: Composite resin contains no mercury, addressing a common concern many parents have about amalgam fillings.
- Bonding strength: The material bonds directly to the tooth structure, providing strong support.
- Conservative preparation: Less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed compared to amalgam fillings.
Many parents ask about the difference between silver and tooth-colored fillings. While both effectively treat cavities, composite fillings have become the standard for pediatric dentistry due to their aesthetic benefits and the ability to preserve more natural tooth structure.
Preventing Cavities in Children
Treating a cavity is important, but preventing new ones protects your child’s long-term oral health. Our preventive dental care services help reduce your child’s cavity risk.
Dental sealants provide a protective barrier on the chewing surfaces of back teeth where cavities most commonly form. According to the American Dental Association, sealants can reduce the risk of decay in molars by nearly 80%.
Fluoride treatments strengthen tooth enamel and may help reverse early signs of decay before a cavity forms. Regular dental cleanings remove plaque buildup that brushing alone may miss.
At home, encourage your child to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals.
Sedation Options for Cavity Treatment
For children who feel anxious about dental treatment or who need multiple fillings, we offer sedation dentistry options. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) helps children stay calm and relaxed while remaining awake throughout the procedure. For children needing deeper relaxation, oral sedation or general anesthesia appointments are available. Dr. Kit discusses all options with you to determine the best approach for your child’s comfort and treatment needs.

Meet your doctor
Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion
Board Certified Pediatric Dentist
I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area. My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.
My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome. I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care. My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child. I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.
I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
