Understanding Your Child’s Unique Dental Needs

Children with special healthcare needs often require a different approach to dental care than typically developing children. These needs can stem from physical, developmental, behavioral, cognitive, or sensory conditions that affect how they experience and respond to dental visits. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, nearly one in five children in the United States has special healthcare needs, and these children are more likely to have unmet dental needs compared to their peers without special needs.

Your child may face increased risks for certain oral health issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, enamel defects, or dental trauma. Some conditions affect tooth development, while others impact the ability to maintain proper oral hygiene at home. Medications can also influence oral health, potentially causing dry mouth or gum overgrowth.

Common Oral Health Challenges

Children with special needs may experience difficulty with routine brushing and flossing due to motor skill limitations, sensory aversions to certain tastes or textures, or behavioral challenges. Some children struggle with oral aversion, making it difficult to tolerate anything in their mouths, including a toothbrush or dental instruments. Others may have physical disabilities that make positioning in a dental chair challenging, or they may need extra time to process instructions and feel comfortable.

Preparing for Your Child’s Appointment

One of the most important steps you can take is to communicate openly with the dental team before the appointment. When you call to schedule, share information about your child’s specific condition, communication style, sensory sensitivities, and any accommodations that have worked well in other medical settings. This allows the team to prepare appropriately and allocate extra time if needed.

Consider visiting the office beforehand for a simple tour. Many children benefit from seeing the environment, meeting team members, and becoming familiar with sights and sounds before their actual appointment. Some practices offer social stories or visual schedules that help children understand what to expect during their visit.

What to Bring and Share

Bring a complete list of your child’s medications, medical conditions, and contact information for other healthcare providers. If your child uses specific communication methods, such as picture cards or sign language, inform the dental team so they can adapt accordingly. Many parents find it helpful to bring comfort items like a favorite toy, blanket, or music that helps their child stay calm.

Share what works best for your child. Does your child respond better to demonstrations rather than verbal explanations? Do certain textures, sounds, or lights cause distress? Are there specific times of day when your child is more cooperative? This information helps the dental team customize the experience to your child’s needs.

Creating a Positive Dental Experience

Dental teams experienced in treating children with special needs understand the importance of flexibility, patience, and individualized care. Appointments may be scheduled at quieter times of day with fewer patients in the waiting room. The dental team may modify their communication style, use behavior guidance techniques, or break treatments into shorter appointments to accommodate your child’s tolerance and comfort level.

Some children benefit from protective stabilization, which helps keep them safe during procedures when traditional behavior guidance techniques aren’t sufficient. In cases where anxiety or the complexity of treatment makes it difficult to provide care, sedation dentistry or general anesthesia may be recommended to ensure comprehensive treatment can be completed safely and comfortably.

The Role of Family Members

Parents and caregivers play an essential role in the success of dental visits. Many practices welcome family members to stay with the child throughout the appointment, providing comfort and helping with communication. Your presence can make a significant difference in how your child responds to the experience.

Between appointments, maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial. Work with your dental team to develop an individualized oral care routine that accommodates your child’s unique challenges. This might include modified toothbrushes, alternative fluoride products for children with sensory aversions, or specific timing strategies that work with your child’s daily routine.

Building a Long-Term Dental Home

Establishing a dental home early in your child’s life sets the foundation for lifelong oral health. A dental home provides continuity of care, preventive services, and emergency dental care when needed. For children with special healthcare needs, this relationship becomes even more valuable as the dental team develops a deep understanding of your child’s individual needs and preferences over time.

Regular dental visits allow for early detection of potential problems and implementation of preventive strategies like dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and dietary counseling. The frequency of visits may be adjusted based on your child’s specific risk factors and oral health needs.

Meet your doctor

Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
