Ready to Schedule Your Child's Visit?

When a child needs dental care but fear, anxiety, or the nature of the treatment makes sitting still feel impossible, the right support can make all the difference in the world. For families throughout the Seguin area, pediatric sedation dentistry offers a gentle, effective way to help children receive the care they need in an environment that feels safe and calm rather than stressful.

At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we understand that every child is different, and that some children simply need a little extra help getting comfortable before and during treatment. Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion is a board-certified pediatric dentist who trained at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, giving him advanced preparation for supporting children with all types of needs, including those who experience dental anxiety or require extensive care. Families from Seguin, New Braunfels, Gonzales, Geronimo, Marion, Kingsbury, Navarro Ranch, and Avery Park trust our team to guide them through the process with honesty and care.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Pediatric sedation dentistry uses safe, carefully monitored medications to help children feel calm and relaxed during dental procedures. It is not about putting children to sleep in the way many parents may imagine. For the most common forms of sedation, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation, children remain awake throughout the entire appointment and simply feel more at ease, making it much easier for them to tolerate the sounds, sensations, and duration of dental treatment.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry provides detailed guidance on the safe use of sedation for pediatric patients, emphasizing careful evaluation, appropriate monitoring, and individualized care plans. At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we follow these standards closely and take the time to review each child’s health history before recommending any sedation option.

Sedation Options We Offer

We offer a range of sedation approaches to meet the needs of children at different comfort levels and treatment stages. Each option is selected thoughtfully based on the child’s age, temperament, health background, and the type of procedure planned.

Reduces Anxiety
Children who feel overwhelmed or scared at the dentist experience sedation as a calmer, more manageable visit from start to finish.

Enables Treatment
When anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or developmental differences make dental care difficult, sedation allows children to receive the treatment they need safely.

Improves Comfort
Sedation minimizes pain and discomfort awareness during longer or more involved procedures, so the visit feels gentler and less stressful for the child.

Builds Positive Associations
A calm, successful visit helps children approach future dental care with confidence rather than fear, supporting lifelong oral health habits.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is the most frequently used and mildest form of sedation available in our office. It is delivered through a small, comfortable nosepiece and takes effect quickly, helping children feel relaxed and at ease within just a few minutes. Children remain fully awake and can respond to instructions throughout the appointment, and the effects wear off rapidly once the nosepiece is removed, meaning most children are back to normal before they even leave the office.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves a liquid or pill medication given before the appointment that helps children feel noticeably calmer by the time they arrive in the treatment chair. Children who receive oral sedation are still conscious and able to respond, but they typically feel drowsy and much less aware of the sights and sounds around them. This option works well for children with moderate anxiety or those who need longer or more involved procedures. Because the effects can linger for a few hours, a parent or guardian will need to stay with the child for the remainder of the day after the appointment.

General Anesthesia

For children who are not able to tolerate dental treatment through nitrous oxide or oral sedation alone, Dr. Kit coordinates general anesthesia appointments at a certified facility, typically once a month. Under general anesthesia, the child is fully asleep and completely unaware of the procedure. This is reserved for cases involving extensive treatment needs, very young patients, or children whose medical or behavioral profile makes lighter sedation insufficient. Dr. Bennion’s residency training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia included the management of medically complex pediatric patients requiring deeper sedation, and he works with trusted anesthesia providers to ensure every GA appointment meets the highest safety standards.

Who May Benefit From Sedation Dentistry

Not every child needs sedation, and we never recommend it unless it is genuinely in the child’s best interest. There are several situations where sedation may be the right choice to consider. Children who have significant dental anxiety, younger children who are not yet developmentally ready to cooperate with treatment, children who need multiple procedures completed in a single visit, and children with sensory sensitivities or special health care needs may all be strong candidates. Our team at Guadalupe Kids Dental also provides special needs dentistry for patients who require additional accommodations and support throughout their visits.

We always begin with a thorough consultation so that families feel informed and comfortable before moving forward.

What to Expect on the Day of Sedation

Follow any pre-sedation instructions we provide, including fasting guidelines for oral sedation and GA. Dress your child comfortably and plan to be with them the full day.
2
Arrival & Setup
Sedation is administered calmly at your child’s pace. For nitrous oxide, a small comfortable nosepiece. For oral sedation, medication was already given before you arrived.
3
During Treatment
Your child is monitored throughout. Dr. Kit and our team work efficiently to complete treatment while your child rests comfortably and safely.

Is Pediatric Sedation Safe?

Safety is the first question most parents ask, and it is also the first thing we think about whenever sedation is part of a treatment plan. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have long, well-established safety records when administered by trained pediatric dental professionals. Before any procedure involving sedation, we conduct a thorough health review that includes the child’s medical history, current medications, and any known health conditions. Our team monitors each child closely throughout the entire appointment to ensure their comfort and wellbeing.

Sedation works hand in hand with our broader commitment to providing positive, low-stress dental experiences. We encourage families to pair sedation visits with consistent preventive care so that children build a healthy relationship with the dentist over time.

    Meet your doctor

    Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion

    Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
