What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses safe, carefully monitored medications to help children feel relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. Rather than putting children to sleep, most forms of pediatric sedation help them feel calm and less anxious while remaining awake and responsive throughout their treatment.

The goal of sedation is not to replace gentle, patient-centered care but to enhance it for children who need extra support. Some children naturally feel anxious about dental visits, while others may have sensory sensitivities, difficulty sitting still for extended periods, or medical conditions that make traditional dental care challenging. Sedation creates a more positive experience for these children, allowing them to receive necessary dental care while building positive associations with dental visits rather than developing fears that could last into adulthood.

Our Sedation Options

We offer a range of sedation options to ensure your child is comfortable during their dental visit. Different levels of sedation are available depending on your child’s specific needs, the complexity of their treatment, and their medical history. Dr. Bennion carefully evaluates each child to determine the most appropriate option for their situation, working closely with families to choose the approach that best meets their child’s individual needs while maintaining the highest safety standards.

1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

One of the most common forms of sedation for children, nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that helps children feel relaxed and at ease during their dental procedure. Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask placed over the nose, and it takes effect quickly. Children remain fully conscious and responsive throughout their treatment. It is a safe and effective option for children with mild anxiety or who need help staying calm during a routine dental treatment. The effects wear off almost immediately after the mask is removed, allowing your child to return to their normal activities.

2. Oral Sedation

For children who need a little more help relaxing, oral sedation is a good option. This involves giving your child medication in the form of a liquid or pill before the procedure to help them feel calm and drowsy. Oral sedation provides deeper relaxation while allowing children to stay awake. It is typically used for more complex procedures or for children who have moderate levels of anxiety. While your child will remain awake, they may feel sleepy and have limited memory of the procedure.

3. IV Sedation

IV sedation is a deeper form of sedation that is administered directly into the bloodstream through a small tube in the arm. This option is recommended for children who need extensive restorative dental work or for those who have high levels of dental anxiety or special needs. IV sedation provides more predictable effects during longer procedures and allows your child to be deeply relaxed, but they can still respond to verbal commands. Our pediatric dental team closely monitors your child throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort.

4. General Anesthesia

In certain cases, general anesthesia may be necessary, especially for children who need extensive treatment or who are unable to tolerate other forms of sedation. General anesthesia results in complete unconsciousness and is reserved for extensive treatment or children with significant medical needs. This option is typically administered in a hospital setting and ensures that the dental work can be completed efficiently while your child remains safe and comfortable.

When Might My Child Need Sedation?

Sedation dentistry can be particularly beneficial in several situations. Not every child needs sedation for dental care, but for some children, it can make the difference between receiving necessary treatment and avoiding dental care altogether. Understanding whether your child might benefit from sedation involves considering their individual temperament, medical history, and treatment needs.

Children who might benefit from sedation include:

  • Highly anxious children: Those who experience severe dental anxiety or become extremely upset or fearful about dental visits despite gentle approaches
  • Special needs patients: Children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, or other developmental conditions that make cooperation difficult
  • Very young children: Toddlers who don’t yet understand the importance of sitting still during procedures or may have difficulty following instructions
  • Children requiring extensive treatment: Those needing multiple procedures, complex procedures, or lengthy appointments in one visit
  • Children with strong gag reflexes: Those who have difficulty tolerating instruments or materials in their mouth
  • Children with previous trauma: Those who have had negative dental or medical experiences in the past
  • Medically complex patients: Children with medical conditions that make traditional dental care challenging

Dr. Bennion’s specialized training in treating special needs and medically compromised patients means he can adapt sedation approaches to work safely and effectively for children with a wide range of needs and conditions.

    Board Certified Pediatric Dentist

I’m excited to open Guadalupe Kids Dental and to be part of the community of Seguin and the surrounding area.  My family and I have been in Texas since 2008, when I completed my Pediatric Dental Residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania.  As part of my pediatric dental training I received extensive training in sedation dentistry and the treatment and management of medically complex pediatric patients.

My wife and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children, including my son who was born with Down Syndrome.  I know that each child is unique and requires personalized care.  My goal is to treat every child as I would treat my own, working together with them and their care givers to provide the care that is right for each individual child.  I emphasize prevention, education and when necessary, the most conservative treatment possible.

I want to make sure that every patient and their families enjoy their dental visit and leaves confident and excited to return.
