If your child gets nervous before a dental visit, you are far from alone — and there is a simple, gentle option that can help. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has been used safely in pediatric dentistry for decades to help children feel calm, relaxed, and ready to get through their appointment with ease. The good news is that it works quickly, wears off fast, and leaves most kids feeling perfectly fine by the time they reach the car.
At Guadalupe Kids Dental, we know that a child’s comfort during treatment is just as important as the treatment itself. Dr. Kristopher “Kit” Bennion is a board-certified pediatric dentist who completed his residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, where he received extensive training in sedation dentistry. His approach prioritizes your child’s well-being at every step, and nitrous oxide is one of the tools we use to make that possible. Before deciding whether it is the right fit for your child, here is what every parent should know.
How Nitrous Oxide Works
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas delivered through a small, comfortable mask placed over your child’s nose. Within a few minutes, most children begin to feel relaxed, a little tingly, and sometimes gently giddy — which is exactly how it earned its nickname. Your child remains awake and aware throughout the entire procedure. They can still hear you, respond to the dentist, and follow simple instructions. They simply feel more at ease and are better able to cope with the visit.
One of the biggest advantages of nitrous oxide is how quickly it wears off. Once the mask is removed and your child breathes normal air for a few minutes, the effects fade almost immediately. In most cases, children are back to their usual selves well before leaving the office. If you would like to learn more about how we approach sedation overall, our dental sedation page covers the full range of options we offer.
Is It Safe?
Nitrous oxide has one of the longest and most well-established safety records of any option used in pediatric dentistry. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s best practices guidelines, nitrous oxide/oxygen is recognized as a safe and effective technique for reducing anxiety and producing analgesia in children when administered by a trained professional. The guidelines outline clear recommendations for its use, including patient screening and monitoring throughout the procedure.
Side effects are uncommon and typically mild. Some children may feel slightly lightheaded or queasy, particularly if they have eaten a large meal beforehand. These effects resolve quickly once the gas is turned off. We take the time to review your child’s health history before recommending nitrous oxide, so you can feel confident the decision is made thoughtfully and with your child’s individual needs in mind.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Not every child needs nitrous oxide, but it may be a great fit for many. We often recommend it for children who experience some of the following:
- Dental anxiety: children who feel nervous or fearful about dental visits and procedures
- Difficulty sitting still: younger children or those who have trouble staying calm for the duration of an appointment
- Sensitive gag reflex: children whose gag reflex makes routine care more challenging
- Longer or more complex procedures: situations where a child needs extra comfort to get through treatment
That said, every child is different, and we always discuss the options with you before moving forward with any form of sedation.
What to Expect at Your Child’s Visit
Before the appointment, we recommend keeping your child’s meal light in the hours leading up to the visit. When your child arrives, we walk them through exactly what will happen so nothing feels surprising or scary. The mask is small and goes right over the nose — many children think it is pretty cool once they see it.
Throughout the procedure, we monitor your child closely and adjust the level of nitrous oxide as needed. After treatment, we switch to pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas from your child’s system. Most children are alert and comfortable by the time we wrap up. Our sedation services are designed to make sure every child — regardless of their anxiety level — can receive the dental care they need without unnecessary stress.
